Roald Dahl Children’s Nurse Lesley McCarthy supports leading national children’s charity Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity to raise vital funds for seriously ill children, young people and their families.
Roald Dahl Nurse Lesley will be joined by husband Tony on a five-day road trip from Oxford to Rochester in a Citroen 2CV - called Florence. The idea for the fundraising road trip was developed in 2018, from the 70th anniversary of the NHS, the 70th anniversary of the iconic 2CV design and also having 70 Roald Dahl Nurses in post. Lesley and her husband love the 2CV and are visiting hospitals, and venues connected to the charity. The road trip starts in Oxford on 30 April and finishes on 4 May.
Lesley says, "As a Roald Dahl Nurse myself, I can see first-hand how we are making a difference. I am in a specialist nurse role for children with serious blood disorders and look after around 150 children across the Thames Valley. My role helps the child and family in numerous ways, from supporting at diagnosis, navigating around the health system, educating and empowering them to manage their condition, supporting at school and the community to ensure they are able to enjoy their life like any other child and then to facilitating their transition to adult services. As a specialist nurse you are the first point of call for most families and are accessible to them."
Lesley has been supporting children, young people and families affected by serious blood conditions at Oxford Children's Hospital, part of Oxford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since April 2018, and now supports in excess of 140 children and young people. Lesley's role is to support children, young people and families throughout diagnosis and through transition to adult healthcare services.
Roald Dahl Nurse Lesly is an inspiration. She works alongside other healthcare professionals including consultants and even emergency department staff to coordinate care and support the whole family. "There is sometimes a three-month period between the diagnosis and the first visit to a consultant and I can provide support and be the point of contact. This immediate response helps them feel more empowered in dealing with their child's condition." Lesley's impact has been felt by not only those in her care, but also other healthcare professionals at Oxford Children's Hospital, including Consultant Paediatric Haematologist Dr Amrana Qureshi. She said, "Lesley has enhanced our service enormously as she provides the key community support the patients and their families need. She allows holistic care and support to be delivered to all these patients with a chronic condition, which is what they really want and deserve."
