What rights do I have for my personal data?

The law gives you lots of rights about your personal information. You have all the same rights as adults! These might be a bit tricky to understand so make sure you ask a parent or guardian if you’re not sure about what they mean.

  • You have the right to tell us if your personal data isn’t right so that we correct it
  • In certain situations, you have the right to ask us to stop using your personal data and delete it
  • You have the right to have a copy of your personal data
  • You have the right to ask us to stop processing your personal data in certain situations
  • You have the right to object to receiving certain emails from us
  • You can ask us not to make decisions about your personal data using ‘automated processing’ which significantly affects you
  • You can ask us to provide your personal data to another service

You can action any of these rights by contacting us at contact@roalddahl.com

What personal data do you collect from me?

If you visit our website, sign up to our newsletter or buy something from our website, we collect the following information about you:

  • Your name
  • Your email address (if you have one or we might take your parent or guardian's email address if you don’t)
  • How old you are and when you were born
  • Where you live
  • Your parent's name
  • What you like about Roald Dahl, such as which books you enjoy reading the most
  • Information about how you use our website – this is known as ‘technical information’

We send your parent an email letting them know you would like to receive our email newsletters or find out more about us including special prizes or competitions we may be running that you can take part in.

If you are in the United States your parent can choose not to agree to this by clicking the link in the email they receive, in which case we will delete all of your personal data from our records. If they don’t opt out then we will send you email newsletters.

If you are in the UK or Europe your parent can agree to you receiving email newsletters from us by clicking a box in the email that your guardian will receive from us. We won’t send you any email newsletters until they have agreed that we can.

Where do we get your personal information from?

We get information about you from you or the person who looks after you (your parent or guardian).

This is usually taken when you contact us by sending us an email directly or through our website or calling us on the phone. You might have asked your parent or guardian to help and they might have contacted us for you – that’s ok too.

If you are under 13 and live in the UK or EU, we will need to get your personal information from your parent or guardian. This is why, when you contact us, we’ll usually ask you how old you are first and, if you’re not yet 13, we will ask your parent or guardian or contact us. If you are 13 or older, then you are able to give us your permission to take your personal information, where we need your permission to do so. We don’t always need your permission and we’ve explained this in more detail in the table below.

What do we do with your personal information?

We have to follow data protection law when it comes to how we use your personal information. This means that there are certain rules that we must follow in order to keep your information safe. This is because your information is really important so we are careful about how we use it.

We can only use your personal information where the law says that we can. The table below explains why we need your information and what we do with it.

What the law says

Your name, date of birth, where you live

We need to use your personal information so we can understand who is visiting our website, and to make sure emails we send you are about things that you’re interested in

This is so we can make sure the emails we send are interesting, as well as looking for ways to see who has been on our website and if we can improve it. This is known as our ‘legitimate interest’.

Your email address

This is so we can contact you about any interesting news we have, such as a new movie, book or competition.

This is so we can let you know any new updates we have. This is known as our ‘legitimate interest’.

‘Technical data’ from our website – our website is very clever and it can work out where you are when you visit our website.

It can also track what you do on our website like how long you visit it or what buttons you press.

We use this information to help improve our website and make it better for you and other visitors. We want to try and make it as helpful as possible.

This is so that we can ensure we are providing the most useful website and information possible. This is known as our ‘legitimate interest’.

Who do you share my personal data with?

Our staff who help to organise and run Roald Dahl will see and use your personal information. Sometimes, we also need to share your personal information with other people outside of Roald Dahl. The section explains who we share your information with.

We work with some other companies to help us run and improve the website. Any information they collect from us is not shared with anyone else.

These companies are:

  • A company that helps us with our marketing (this is when we send you things like email newsletters). They are called ‘Mailchimp’.
  • A company called ‘Mailgun’ that helps us contact your parents to make sure they’re happy for you to sign up to our newsletter.
  • A company that helps us understand how you use our website and whether it’s good or not. This is run by Google Analytics and helps us understand how you use the site so we can improve it for you.
  • If you come to visit us, you might also see a camera recording some of our building, so we can make sure everyone is safe while they’re visiting us. The camera is run by Google.
  • We may also need to share your personal data with other companies that help us run Roald Dahl behind the scenes – such as the company that runs our website and the company that helps us to respond to emails that are sent to us from the “Contact Us” section of the website.
  • We may also need to share your personal data if we sell our business or parts of it, or if we need to get help from a lawyer or answer a legal question from law enforcement bodies (these are organisations that make sure we are following the rules for how we run our business – sort of like a headmaster).
  • A company that helps you send messages to us using the contact form on our website; they’re called ‘Wufoo’ (woohoo!).

If you would like more information above who we share your data with, you can ask us for it by emailing us at: contact@roalddahl.com

How long do you keep my personal data for?

We keep your personal data for as long as we need to, to provide you with our news or get in touch with you when you have asked us to. If you or your parent decide you no longer want emails from us we will stop sending them and delete your personal data within 28 days.

What happens to my data when I am no longer a child?

When you turn 13 (if you live in the United States), or 16 (if you live in the UK or Europe), you can ask us to remove the consent given by your parent or guardian if you wish to do so by contacting us at contact@roalddahl.com. If you do not contact us, the consent given by your parent remains in place.

How do you keep my personal data safe?

We take reasonable steps, which are appropriate to the type of personal data and the activities it is used for, to keep your personal data secure and to prevent anyone else being able to see it.

What other types of information do you collect about me?

We don’t show you any adverts on the roalddahl.com site. However, we do need to collect something called cookies to make sure our site works for you and to improve our site – this is part of the ‘technical data’ that we collected which is explained in the table above.

These cookies are not delicious biscuits. Cookies on websites are small computer files which are stored on your device (this is what you use to visit our website and may be your computer, tablet or phone). They collect small bits of information related to you or your device and the roalddahl.com site so that we can remember your preferences and make sure our site works well for you.

What about links to other sites?

Our website links to other sites. We don’t have control of those other sites. If you are leaving roalddahl.com be sure to check the privacy notices of the site you are visiting. You may need to ask your parent or guardian to help you.

What if you make a change to this policy?

If we need to make a change to this policy, we will post a new date at the top and a notice to tell you we made a change. If we need to make a big change, we will email you and your parent to let you know before we make any changes so that you can decide if you still want us to manage your personal data.

How can I contact you about my data?

If you or your parent want to contact us you can do so at contact@roalddahl.com
