The impact of Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses

Highlighting, and showcasing the impact of specialist nursing for seriously ill children is very important to demonstrating the effectiveness of our work

Our partners Sheffield Hallam and Royal College of Nursing

We partner with a number of organisations to demonstrate the value of Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses.

Sheffield Hallam University

We have commissioned Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to produce an independent report on the impact of Roald Dahl Nurses on both the children and families they care for, and the NHS teams that they work with. Each of the 22 Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses appointed since 2016 and their key stakeholders have been invited to participate in the evaluation. Although the final evaluation report and summary is due to be completed by May 2021, initial feedback and findings from SHU include:

• Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity is highly regarded as a partner by the NHS. It is seen as reliable, caring, committed and with an emphasis upon quality in terms of what it does and how it does it by the NHS.

• Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses and their managers are passionate about being, or employing, a Roald Dahl Nurse.

• There is a sense in which the commitment to the roles demonstrated by Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity was significant as a catalyst for the NHS Trusts partner organisations. In a cash-strapped NHS, the financial commitment to funding the first two years of a post has enabled business cases to be ‘signed off’ which otherwise might have been frozen or rejected outright.

Royal College of Nursing

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity is committed to demonstrating the value of nursing.

In partnership with the Royal College of Nursing, and applying the principles of economic assessment, we have developed four case studies that illustrate the financial value of our Roald Dahl Nurses.

Kirsten Johnson, RD Nurse

Kirsten Johnson - Roald Dahl Sapphire Epilepsy Nurse Specialist, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust

Through rigorous analysis of her records, Kirsten has demonstrated that just one aspect of her service - that is her telephone and advice line service - has saved the NHS £84,778 in just one year. This aspect of her service has also contributed to her NHS trust meeting its 18 week waiting time target.
