2021 marks a marvellous 30 years since Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity was set up by Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl. The charity, which provides specialist nurses and support to seriously ill children, will kick off its special year by reflecting on its milestones from establishing the first ever Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nurse to creating the world’s first SWAN (Syndromes Without A Name) Specialist Nurse.
Starting on Nurses Day (12th May) and running until the charity’s official birthday in September, there will be a big celebration of the charity’s network of Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses and the difference they make to the over 21,000 seriously ill children and families in their care. The results of a study into the impact of Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses conducted with Sheffield Hallam University, will be released in May and the charity will hold its Roald Dahl Nursing Conference on the 21st May, where it will announce its focus for the coming year. The proto-type of an exciting Nurse-led innovation project using immersive technologies to improve the pathway for seriously ill children as they move from child to adult services will also be showcased.
Do look out for some marvellous fundraising opportunities throughout the year – to be announced via our social media, newsletter and website – which will ensure the charity and its nurses can continue their vital work and to enable the charity to establish more Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses.
Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity Chief Executive, Louise Griew says: “When Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity was set up in 1991, I am m sure that no one could have foreseen that it would celebrate its 30th anniversary in the midst of a global pandemic. These last few months have been humbling for everyone at the charity as they have seen just how vital a lifeline our network of Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses provides to the seriously ill children and families in their care. With this in mind, we are determined to make 2021 as special as possible and to both celebrate our nurses whilst also highlighting the urgent need to establish more Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses. We are very excited about the series of events we have planned throughout the year – watch this space for more information on how to get involved!”
