Roald Dahl Specialist Nurse, Sarah and colleague Roxy are taking part in the Captain Tom 100 Challenge and walking 100km - the equivalent of 100 laps of Darent Valley NHS Hospital - to help establish more Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses.

Sarah and Roxy will walk 100km - the equivalent of 100 laps of the hospital where they are based - inspired by multi-million-pound NHS fundraiser Captain Tom Moore, who famously completed 100 laps of his own home to mark his 100th birthday.

Their walk is part of a national fundraising event for charities, taking place from 30th April to 3rd May 2021, with money raised by the pair going to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity to help establish more vital Roald Dahl Nurse posts, like Sarah’s within the NHS.

Sarah, who has been a nurse for almost 20 years, took up her new role just six months ago. She says: “I am so inspired that this charity exists to help families; it’s amazing. A lot of my work involves me being there for the families, both practically and emotionally. It can be scary for the child, siblings and parents to have a diagnosis of epilepsy, we help to reduce that anxiety and show that hospital is not something to be scared about.”

Sarah provides cohesion between what can be a complex health and social care system, bringing in education and community support, accessing financial and benefit advice and working holistically around the child. Altogether, Sarah and Roxy support more than 420 seriously ill children and young people and their families in the Dartford area.

Sarah said: “A Roald Dahl specialist nurse is often an important part of a family's life; when they have worries, they reach out to us to get the support they need. I’m very passionate and proud to support the charity.”

We are so grateful to Sarah and Roxy and will be cheering them on virtually! Their marvellous fundraising will help to establish more Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses, just like Sarah, across the UK.
