Finance Assistant

The Roald Dahl Story Company Ltd manages the stories of Roald Dahl, across a number of channels including book, theatre, movies, TV marketing, brand partnerships and merchandise.

Salary: Circa. £23,000 - £26,000 (depending on experience)
Contract: 12-month fixed-term contract with scope to go permanent  
Working pattern: Monday to Friday, 9.30 to 17.30

The finance team provides ‘best in class’ support to the whole company, guiding on controls and policies, and providing robust information and analysis to drive revenue and profits across the business. Reporting into the Financial Controller, the Finance Assistant will be responsible for daily accounting transactions, ensuring processes are optimised for the changing business. 

You will provide constant interaction with creative staff, agents, suppliers and customers. Managing these relationships whilst maintaining accurate accounts will be key to success.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Banking – import transactions into accounting system, match/post transactions and reconcile at period end
  • Suppliers – set up and maintain supplier accounts on accounting system, credit check new suppliers, check and post all invoices onto supplier accounts, send for approval via ApprovalMax system, reconcile A/P ledger and resolving issues
  • Payments – ensure correct supplier bank details on accounting system, prepare weekly payment run and create BACS file on the banking system, ad-hoc payments
  • Income – enter all income received onto customer account in accounting system and onto spreadsheet tracker, calculate commissions owed on income and raise supplier invoices, maintain royalty database and track income owed to third parties, raise sales invoices for non-royalty contracts, credit control, reconcile A/R ledger at period end and resolve queries
  • Petty cash – issue cash to staff ensuring valid VAT receipts are obtained, post transactions onto accounting system, count physical cash and reconcile to system at period end
  • Credit cards – complete paperwork for new credit card requests, manage Expensify system used by staff to record credit card expenditure including checking transactions and approvals, provide training to staff on Expensify and company expenditure policies
  • Fixed assets – enter new assets onto the register in the accounting system, post monthly depreciation and reconcile
  • Organising archiving of physical documents annually
  • Ensuring process notes kept up to date and accurate
  • Clearing the suspense account, retrieving accidental personal spend from staff
  • Participating in the annual audit
  • Adhering to the company's financial policies and procedures
  • Such other duties and responsibilities as we may notify you of from time to time

How you can further develop within the role:

  • Responsible for withholding tax
  • Preparing and submitting quarterly VAT returns

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Have a passion for the works of Roald Dahl, and the entertainment industry in general
  • Are of graduate calibre and hold a minimum of 6-12 months’ experience in an accounts-based role
  • Are part-qualified or seeking to further your career by studying for an accountancy qualification – support will be given
  • Have experience of accounting software (preferably Xero) and Excel spreadsheets
  • Have superior attention to detail and accuracy in work
  • Have excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Are a good team player, able to prioritise tasks and complete them with minimum supervision
  • Have integrity and honesty, foster a culture of trust and respect
  • Have solid communication skills, both written and verbal
